Clarke began her career as a dancer and performed on Broadway in West Side Story, Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope, and Grind, among others. She was the first African-American and first African-American woman to direct and choreograph a major staging of Porgy and Bess (for the Houston Grand Opera).
