Review: DRACULA: A COMEDY OF TERRORS at Arizona Theatre Company

Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors at Arizona Theatre Company is bloody brilliant! The play, written by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen and directed by Gordon Greenberg, is a laugh-out-loud spectacle! Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors was a smash-hit off-Broadway.

Here in Tucson, it feels like we have stepped into my favorite theatre district of New York: Off-Broadway! Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors is hilarious in every sense of the word. It is extremely fast-paced and funny, with clever and tongue-in-cheek dialogue that will have you in stitches. Some of the humor is more adult and contains innuendo, so discerning audience members will appreciate the jokes more. Continue reading …

Review: ATC’s ‘Dracula’ is All Hung, No Fangs in Hilarious Prince of Darkness Sendoff

If Bram Stoker could see what Gordon Greenberg has done to his blood-sucking Prince of Darkness.

He’s turned him into a sex symbol — a buffed and wickedly handsome heartthrob who makes grown women swoon and publicly emit groans of ecstasy that are best left to the privacy of one’s boudoir.

Heck, even the men are writhing in ecstasy at the sight of Dracula in skintight jeans, slicked-back hair and tear-away crotched vest that accentuates those biceps.

Greenberg’s reimagined Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors, which Arizona Theatre Company opened Thursday night before a full house at the Temple of Music and Art, still focuses on that whole sucking the blood/eternal life thing. But his approach is far different. Continue reading …

Modern Vampire Tale: Arizona Theatre Company brings in ‘Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors’

Vampires, especially Dracula, have been presented in different ways, from frightening, to comical, to sensual. With their show Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors, Gordon Greenberg and Steven Rosen bring a comedic, gender-bending reimagination of the classic gothic tale.

In the show, English real estate agent Jonathan Harker is meeting with a new client, who happens to be the fearsome vampire Dracula. He is looking for a London bachelor pad, but he takes an interest in the real estate agent’s fiancée, Lucy Westfeldt.

Dracula is being hunted by a group led by prolific female vampire hunter Jean Van Helsing, who chase him from Transylvania to the British countryside. Continue reading …

Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors Creatives

Three Things to Know

  1. This lightning-paced spoof reimagines Bram Stoker’s Dracula as a campy, cross-dressing, quick-change comedy in the vein of The 39 Steps or The Play That Goes Wrong.
  2. It was co-written by Steve Rosen and Gordon Greenberg, who previously collaborated on Broadway’s The Secret of My Success.
  3. Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors features five actors playing over a dozen characters in under two hours.

About the Play – Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors

Dracula is 500 years young and in the market for a new bachelor pad. His Goal: A place surrounded by plenty of natural shade to keep his skin silky smooth and a place that’s far away from other residences so he can host his totally rad ragers in peace. Most of all, he wants an inviting place that will help lure trap beguile charm future flames into sticking around for … a while. After all, immortal beings have needs, too, don’t they?
